A New Approach to Miniature Shipbuilding
This is an article covering a new (or maybe old-fashioned) approach to anyone contemplating taking up this fascinating hobby. It is quite different from the accepted view of 21st century model shipbuilding that is mainly centred on kits, and the rather strange statement or belief of “I could never do that” when applied to scratchbuilding. Neither do I follow the well-trodden path of modelling warships, but keep to the more varied and interesting subject of merchant shipping. This download covers tools and materials, plan sources in books, where to obtain supplies of wire for rigging, the basics of making miniature deckhouse panels, and an examples of my earlier work, plus plans and completed image of my latest build, the topsail schooner Julia, of 1870.
