LGBTQ teens are 3.5x more likely to die by suicide. 39% have seriously considered suicide. It is our responsibility as school counselors to “provide a safe space for LGBTQ students” (see ASCA’s position statement: click here). This group is less about the analysis of their sexual orientation, and more about giving them skills to function socially and emotionally in school. If they are struggling with their sexual orientation or having conflicts with parents about their “coming out”, it would be best to refer them to a mental health professional who can provide them with long-term assistance. This group is still helpful for them in the meantime while they are doing outside therapy because it will give them peer connections and coping skills to use at school.
