Control return and line break types using GREP

GREP Return and Break is an Adobe InDesign script that finds and cleans up a common typesetting problem: paragraph returns and forced line breaks left sitting in front of a break character. When text is reflowed or pasted, you often end up with empty paragraphs or stray returns just before a column, frame, or page break — invisible clutter that can throw off spacing and composition. This script locates every such spot, lets you step through them, and removes or replaces them.

It scans for one or more returns (¶) or forced line breaks immediately before a break character, including any horizontal whitespace (spaces, tabs, non-breaking spaces) caught between them. You can filter which break types to include, choose the search scope, navigate the matches with Prev / Next, and apply a fix to one match or all at once
