NEST Structured Literacy Spelling Programme Part 2
PART 2 — Structured Literacy Programme: Phonics, Spelling and Reading (Weeks 14 to 26)
This booklet has no age label. It is written with older children in mind however, so that the reading passages are of interest and not patronising or immature.
This is Part 2 of the complete 26-week structured literacy programme, picking up directly from where Part 1 leaves off. It covers the more advanced patterns: suffixes including tion, sion, ous, ful, less and ness; prefixes; combined prefixes and suffixes; Greek and Latin roots; syllable types; high-frequency irregular words; morphology; fluency and phrasing; full Bloom's comprehension practice; and a final consolidation week. The reading passages get longer and the comprehension questions more demanding as the weeks progress; by Week 24 students are working at six full levels of inference and analysis.
Part 2 assumes the foundations from Part 1 are secure. If your young person has not worked through Part 1, start there. This programme is sequential; every skill builds on every skill that came before it.
Three sheets per week, around 20 minutes each. The same calm layout throughout: structured, uncluttered, with a read-aloud option on every single sheet and no grades anywhere. Spelling practice uses three methods every week including phoneme sound analysis, which builds the exact segmentation skills underpinning confident, independent spelling.
Full comprehension answers for parents and carers are collected at the back of this booklet. Print it, keep the answers section separate, and work through it in order. I would suggest being mindful correcting work and using ticks or crosses. Use the answers as an opportunity for reflection on answers.
