The world can feel quite overwhelming at times. But each day is a chance to find the joy, work to be a better human and help others. This beautiful yarn from Twisted Fiber Art reminded me of a sunrise, how each day is a chance to start over and rise again. This was especially true of Twisted Fiber Art, they had a fire in their building and when through a lot of changes to rise and start again.
Materials
Needles
3.5 mm / US 4 at least 100cm / 40” long or size to obtain gauge
Yarn
Main colour: 100g fingering weight yarn 420m / 470 yards
Contrast colour: 50g fingering weight yarn 210m / 235yards
Sample knitted in:
MC – 100g Twisted Fiber Art Evolve Gradient yarn on Muse base 50% merino, 50% silk in the Blaze colourway.
CC – 50g Twisted Fiber Art Muse base 50% merino, 50% silk in pink semi-solid.
Note about yardage and substitutions
This pattern is designed with yarn support from Twisted Fibre Art and was made to show off the whole skein of their Gradient yarn. I used all but the last few meters of both MC and CC.
They have a generous yardage of 420m/470 yards per 100g, not all fingering weight yarn has as many yards per 100g so please check that the yarn you use has enough yardage or you might run short.
Options:
1) Use yarn from your stash to make a gradient of your own.
2) Use your CC for the last garter band, eyelet row and bind off
3) Use 2 skeins of MC
Substitution:
This yarn has silk in it which gives it a lovely drape when blocked, but you really can make it out of anything you like.
- Wool: a good substitute is a yarn with a higher wool content or even a wool nylon blend. Note that because of its memory, after blocking wool will bounce back a bit more and the final shawl might be a little bit smaller.
- Acrylic is also a good option, again will not quite have the same drape but that is okay. I have heard of people steaming acrylic when blocking to get a similar drapey effect, but I have not tried it myself.
- Plant-based yarn like bamboo behave a lot like silk so will drape well.
Notions
Stitch markers
Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
Gauge
23 stitches and 27 rows over 10cm / 4” stocking stitch, blocked.
Gauge is not critical, but it will affect your overall yarn usage and finished size of your shawl.
Size
Wingspan 153cm/60”
Depth from neck to bottom of shawl 56cm/22”
