This is such a special place for me. My husband’s and my favorite past time when we lived near the Seto Inland Sea was snorkeling. The Seto Sea has a unique ecosystem with a fascinating variety of sealife. But we both wanted to try at least once in our lives to go swimming in the Pacific Ocean. On a late August afternoon, we arrived here at Sakurahama Beach in Tosashimizu (Kochi Prefecture) right when the lifeguard went off-duty. The waves were rough from the typhoon swirling far offshore, but we decided to chance it anyway, and wow, were we treated to a feast for the eyes! More kinds of fish than we could count! So colorful in pinks, yellows, blues and reds, gorgeous species like moray eels, butterflyfish, anthias and damselfish, pufferfish and pipefish, clown anemonefish and so much more. The sand was soft, the air was hot and the water blue as dreams, contrasting perfectly with the wave-worn slabs of stone that stretched out like piers into the sea. I painted this as a commemoration of that dive and love how it brings the spirit of the sea to our living room, making us feel a little less landlocked. May it refresh and invigorate your space as well. Perfect for sea lovers and Japan fans alike!
