Stair steps of color march in two directions across this rectangular scarf (or stole). This easy modular project keeps your interest with each new “step” you take.
Taking Steps is a modular knit that uses one color at a time. The scarf is worked in garter stitch. Stitches are picked up and joined to the sides of previous blocks to add new sections. After the main part of the scarf is complete, stitches are picked up along each of the sides to add a garter stitch border.
Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but using a different yarn weight or needle size will affect the size of the finished project.
The pattern instructions are written with detailed schematics for each modular section.
Sizing
Instructions are included for adapting the size of the scarf.
The sample used fingering weight yarn, but knitters might experiment with using a different yarn and needle size. Please note that changing the yarn will affect the size of the scarf and the amount of yarn needed.
Yarn Colors
The pattern instructions call for 3 colors of yarn, but the pattern includes a diagram for designing your own color scheme. This project would be perfect for stashbusting and using up small amounts of colors. Every section could be worked in a different color, or knitters could use a separate color for each square.
