My first year in Japan, I wanted to see it all. So for spring break I went on a month-long solo backpacking tour of the four major islands of the archipelago. This was in the early ‘00s when traveling by ferry was the cheapest and breeziest option for long-distance inter-Japan travel. The Shin Nihonkai ferry from Otaru in Hokkaido to Maizuru in Kyoto took around three days, and it was incredible fun to meet fellow passengers, spot wild birds from the deck, and soak up the sun while being lulled by the hum of the ferry’s engines and the rushing of the waves below. I wanted to capture that fresh, fun feeling of ferry travel in this 4x6 watercolor piece. May it fill your home or office space with a sense of adventure and forward motion.
