After the Certainty

You might find this helpful if...

  • you reach for peace, forgiveness, or meaning very quickly, before a feeling has had space
  • you notice yourself thinking things like everything happens for a reason, before you've felt what's underneath
  • you grew up somewhere that left little room for doubt or questioning
  • you're not sure whether your faith is helping you feel, or helping you avoid feeling
  • you find uncertainty difficult to sit with, and want to understand why
  • you're carrying a pattern that once helped you cope, and wondering what it's protecting you from

This resource won't tell you what to do

This is not a flaw. It is worth honouring rather than correcting. Instead, it gently helps you to:

  • notice where spirituality was safe, and where it wasn't
  • recognise the moments when a spiritual or positive framing arrives before a feeling has had room to be felt
  • understand what a familiar pattern of coping may have once protected you from
  • explore whether spiritual meaning and difficult feeling can sit together, rather than one replacing the other

There is no right way to complete it, and no expectation that everything changes today.

What's included

  • Printable A4 PDF resource and worksheet (3 pages), Print version for handwriting
  • An infosheet on recognising spiritual bypassing and where it comes from
  • Five reflective prompts: Recognition, Uncertainty, Curiosity, Understanding, and Reflection
  • A closing reflection space

This resource may be helpful if you're experiencing...

  • difficulty sitting with uncertainty
  • a sense that your spiritual beliefs arrived before your feelings did
  • questions about a religious or spiritual upbringing that left little room for doubt
  • a pattern of reaching for peace or meaning that feels automatic rather than chosen

This resource is not...

  • a substitute for therapy
  • a crisis resource
  • a diagnostic tool
  • something you have to complete all at once
  • for or against any particular faith or belief

You are welcome to work through it at your own pace, return to it later, or use it alongside a counsellor if that feels helpful.

Created with compassion

Every Place to Talk Therapies resource is built around the same belief:

Change rarely begins with finding the perfect answer. More often, it begins with enough safety to become curious about your own experience. That means there are no perfect answers inside these pages, only gentle invitations to notice, reflect, and understand yourself a little more.
