Sweet Savannah Sue
Here's Fats in "song-plugger" mode, proudly spruiking one of his own songs, Sweet Savannah Sue, from his then-current musical revue of the time, "Hot Chocolates". In the same session, Fats recorded another "well-known" tune debuting in the show, Ain't Misbehavin'. As if this wasn't enough, the classic solos I've Got A Feeling I'm Falling, Gladyse, Valentine Stomp (see previous videos) and Love Me or Leave Me were also recorded that same prolific afternoon.
Of note is the astounding consecutive triadic tenths in the left-hand accompaniment in the C section. Here's where Fats' "Bunch of Bananas”, as George Shearing apparently referred to them on shaking Fats' hand, clearly outshine themselves. And played on top of that is undoubtedly one of Fats' grooviest of solos!
For simplicity's sake, I've not indicated it, but Fats' use of pedal here is remarkable in the way he achieves a seamlessly smooth and legato sound throughout the performance.
