Introduction to Architecture Course

Learn about our built environment exploring the world of architecture, design, and construction created by a Registered Architect. Covering a variety of topics including the evolution of buildings, Biblical structures, and famous architects, the class also includes exposure to building codes & regulations, major building parts, common building materials, and interior design.


The course discusses engineering, construction, and job-site tools, trades, and safety. Review school/licensing requirements, career opportunities in the design/construction industry, sustainability, awesome structures, and the future of architecture and design in this 17-Lesson series.

Course Description:

Learn about our built environment exploring the world of architecture, design, and construction created by a Registered Architect. Covering a variety of topics including the evolution of buildings, Biblical structures, and famous architects, the class also includes exposure to building codes & regulations, major building parts, common building materials, and interior design. The course discusses engineering, construction, and job-site tools, trades, and safety. Review school/licensing requirements, career opportunities in the design/construction industry, sustainability, awesome structures, and the future of architecture and design. It is based on Florida architecture requirements, codes, and standards but several courses are appropriate for general knowledge and application.

 

Supplies Required:

Internet access to view the lectures is required. Supplies for suggested activities (optional).

 

Course format:

Student watches video lecture lessons. Students answer Review questions. Essay and Suggested Activity provided with each lesson are at the discretion and administration/supervision of the Parent.


Course length:

The complete Course is comprised of 17 Lessons. However, there is no requirement to complete them all (as the format allows any quantity of Lessons to be taken in any order desired), no requirement to complete all 17, and no requirement to take them in sequential order (although helpful).

 

Lesson Content:

Lessons include technical lecture (video), optional Review Questions, Essay topic, and a suggested Activity.


Lectures:

Videos are approximately 45 minutes of a narrated lecture with a variety of short videos scattered throughout.


Review Questions:

Each Lesson includes 3-5 Review Questions.


Essay:

Each Lesson includes an essay topic at the end of the lecture. Essays are optional and only required at the Parents’ discretion, and with metrics established by the parent (typed, written, sources cited, etc). This option provides students an opportunity to incorporate research, and writing skills into this curriculum while also diving deeper into the realm of architecture and construction.


Activity:

Each Lesson includes a suggested activity which can mostly be accomplished at home with few standard household supplies. A printer is helpful but not required.


Grading Suggestion:

Lesson Review Questions, Essays, and Activities all provide opportunities for evaluation and documentation of the course. Utilizing all three as grading opportunities, the Parent can determine the final grade using any adjustment or metrics they determine appropriate for their child.
