The Undated Log
An undated log for a tablet: seventy-two entry pages, a thirty-six line index, and no dates printed anywhere.
Every entry page is the next page. Write on Tuesday, then not again until the following Monday, and nothing in the file has been wasted or left blank in reproach. The index is the spine: thirty-six lines, each one linked to its entry, and every entry linked back to the index.
WHAT'S INSIDE
Start - the contract this file makes with you
Index - thirty-six lines, each linked to its entry
Restart - the page for coming back
Entry pages - seventy-two of them, undated
THE PART NOBODY ELSE BUILDS
No dates printed, and that is the whole design rather than a missing feature. A dated journal is a record of the days you failed to open it: skip a fortnight and the evidence is printed on the paper, in advance, in ink. Here the next page is simply the next page you write on, whenever that is. The Restart page exists for the same reason. Coming back after a long gap is a normal thing that happens to everyone who keeps a journal, so it gets a page of its own rather than an apology.
