Free AQA Unit Award Workbook: Mythical Creatures: Dragons

A completely free, full AQA Unit Award workbook, so you can see exactly how the Nest Pembrokeshire Hub works before you join.

Dragons turn up in stories all over the world, from Y Ddraig Goch on the Welsh flag to the dancing dragons of Chinese New Year. In this 28 page workbook your young person becomes a dragon detective, travelling across cultures, digging into history and fossils, and looking at the real science that might explain dragon magic. It matches AQA Unit Award 121547, Mythical Creatures: Dragons, at Level One.

What is inside

• Task 1: Here Be Dragons! Comparing European and Chinese dragons, with fact files, pictures and a comparison table.
• Task 2: Dragons Are Mirrors. Exploring what dragon stories tell us about the fears and values of the people who told them, including the Welsh legend of the red and the white dragon.
• Task 3: Real Life Dragons. Komodo dragons, pterosaurs, crocodiles and the fossil bones that may have started the myth, including the dinosaur found on a beach near Penarth.
• Task 4: The Science of Dragon Magic. Fire breathing beetles, glowing creatures and ultrasonic sound, researched and presented in whatever way suits your young person best.
• A bonus challenge to design a believable dragon, just for fun.

Made for home education

Every task explains what it is about, what to do and how to show it. Answers can be typed straight into the space under each question, and young people can add pictures, links, voice notes or short videos instead of writing if they prefer. Hand picked YouTube videos are linked throughout, and there is a final checklist plus the official AQA award criteria at the back.

This booklet has no age label. It is written for curious minds, and curious minds come in all shapes, sizes and ages. If the topics sound interesting to your young person, it will work for them.
