If thereās one thing Iāve learned as a dedicated dog mom, itās that Max, my golden Labrador, has a serious weakness for treats. The moment he hears the crinkle of a treat bag or catches a whiff of something delicious baking in the oven, his tail turns into a wagging blur. But as much as I love spoiling him, I also want to make sure his treats are as healthy as they are tasty. Thatās why I started making homemade dog treatsābecause nothing beats knowing exactly what goes into the snacks we give our beloved furry companions.
One of my all-time favorite recipes, and Maxās too, is these Homemade Grain-Free Dog Treats. Theyāre packed with nutritious ingredients like almond flour, peanut butter, and pumpkin puree, making them a perfect, healthy snack for dogs with grain sensitivities. Plus, theyāre ridiculously easy to make, and trust me, the smell alone will have your pup sitting at attention in the kitchen!
Why Go Grain-Free?
Some dogs, like Maxās best buddy Bella, have sensitivities to grains, which can lead to digestive issues, itchy skin, or low energy. By swapping out traditional flour for almond flour, these treats become not only tummy-friendly but also packed with protein and healthy fats that support a shiny coat and strong muscles.
The Recipe: Homemade Grain-Free Dog Treats
Ingredients:
- 2 cups almond flour
- 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (unsweetened, xylitol-free)
- 1/2 cup pumpkin puree (100% pure, no added sugar or spices)
- 2 large eggs
Instructions:
1ļøā£ Preheat your oven to 350Ā°F (175Ā°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
2ļøā£ Mix Wet Ingredients ā In a large bowl, whisk together the peanut butter, pumpkin puree, and eggs until well combined.
3ļøā£ Add Dry Ingredients ā Gradually mix in the almond flour until a firm dough forms. If itās too sticky, add a little more almond flour.
4ļøā£ Roll & Cut ā Lightly flour a surface with almond flour, roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness, and use cookie cutters to create fun shapes. (Max prefers bone-shaped treats, of course!)
5ļøā£ Bake ā Place the treats on the lined baking sheet and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly firm.
6ļøā£ Cool Completely ā Let the treats cool on a wire rack before giving one to your eager pup.
Storage Tips
Keep these treats in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or refrigerate them for up to two weeks. If you want to make a big batch, they freeze beautifullyājust take a few out at a time and let them thaw before serving.
Maxās Seal of Approval
The first time I made these treats, Max sat patiently by the oven, nose twitching with excitement. The moment they cooled enough to eat, he devoured one with so much enthusiasm that I knew I had found a new favorite for him. Now, whenever I bake a fresh batch, I canāt help but smile at the pure joy on his face. After all, nothing feels better than treating our pups to something both delicious and healthy!
