This Month's Top Three, oops, wait... Top TWO Reads

Hello!

Before I say anything, I need to offer up a HUGE dose of appreciation to all of you who have pre-ordered Beast or Famine from my Payhip Bookstore.

When I logged onto the shop after returning home and saw those numbers...well, at first I thought my jetlagged eyes weren't seeing straight.

Then I realized nothing was any more wrong with my vision than usual and was truly blown away.

Of course, I absolutely appreciate you pre-ordering from whichever store you prefer, but since I know buying books (or anything, really) from somewhere other than "the big retailers" can be scary, I really am grateful that you're willing to help me add just a little bit more "independence" to being an indie author : )

Okay, now for the good stuff...we've returned from France!

Well that's not really "good", as France is a fabulous place to explore, and returning to reality is never fun. But despite having some horror stories to tell about our flights, and despite Mr Husband bringing home a parting gift (COVID), we had a mostly great time. And yes, photo-filled posts will be coming soon.

Anyway, as for book recommendations....

I got a fair amount of reading done while on vacation, but since trips to the boulangerie were far more important than crafting book reviews, I don't have an "official" Top Three Reads this month, but I do have two books I think you'll love!

Top Book #1: A Demonically Delightful Diversion

This book, from a new-found author friend, had me laugh-snorting an embarrassing number of times and is definitely going to be amongst my Top Books of the Year...

The Demon, the Hero, and the City of Seven

by A.E. Kincaid

What do you get when you take a foul-mouthed demon (who's not very good at demon-ing) and a kind-hearted hero (who's not very good at hero-ing), then make it so they can't get more than a few feet apart without being magically snapped back together?

A wonderful setup for a wonderfully humorous tale.

This book is laugh-out-loud funny it’s got two quirky characters who play off each other to perfection, it’s got a great sense of adventure as Reg (the hero) and Mal (the demon) go on a sometimes-slapstick quest to get themselves separated without destroying the world.

The only problem is…the story and writing are so delightful and easy-to-read that I read the book far too quickly (luckily it’s the first in a series, so there’s more laugh-out-loud reading to come).

I highly recommend putting down whatever you're reading and starting this book NOW if you’re keen for some comic fantasy adventuring, some snarky quips, and the forming of a very reluctant bond of friendship!

Note: Mal is a demon, and as such he's got a lot of vices that might put off certain readers. If potty language bothers you, this is not the book for you.

Top Book #2: Bunny-Filled Hilarity

The second book is from an author whose work I've loved for a few years now and who is a "rubbing elbows with" new acquaintance.

Other Plans

by Caimh McDonnell

I'm a huge fan of Caimh McDonnell's Bunny McGarry books (as well as his Stranger Times series he writes under C.K. McDonnell), so I was thrilled to learn there's a new Bunny book coming out on the 17th of this month!

If you haven't read any of the Bunny books, they're crime thrillers, but with a hefty dose of wry Irish humor and a fabulous cast of lively characters (some of whom steal the show every time they "step" onto the page).

Anyway, even though I haven't read this one yet, I'm not going to hesitate a second to recommend it.

And if you don't want to wait until the 17th to meet Bunny, you can jump into the series with any of Caimh's books (which you can learn more about HERE).

Wrapping up with a quick reminder and some great news...

Just a quick reminder that Beast or Famine is flying your way very soon.\

Want a dragon waiting for you the moment you wake up on the 19th? Then pre-order the book today. Oh, and you might want to have some eggs on hand, because that dragon will want an omelet or two.

Concerned about about this being the fourth book in a series? Don't be. I've had several wonderful test readers who are complete newbies to the Circus of Unusual Creatures, and they have all confirmed that jumping into this book without having read the other three didn't cause a lick of confusion.

If you're ready to join Duncan as he stumbles through this hilarious whodunit, here's some links to play with...

  1. You can try a sample chapter from the book and read its description HERE
  2. You can pre-order the book from my Payhip Bookstore HERE or from loads of other retailers HERE

For you paperback lovers, there will be "real" books coming on release day!

BOF quote 2

And now the good news...

Apple has chosen Beast or Famine as one of the tales they'll be highlighting in their Autumn Sneak Peak Promotion that's running this week!!!!

I have no idea if this will do much for Duncan, but since Apple is pretty stringent in their choices, it's always exciting to be selected for one of these opportunities.

Have a great week and I'll type at you soon!
