Its time for the second pattern in the Minilicious Pattern club. This was actually the first design in the set that I finished, so I have been waiting a long time to finally be able to share the Porthole Cowl with you all!
The cowl is a simple shape, a tube knit round and round on a small circular needle and the ends grafted together when your finished. The repeat is easily memorisable and makes this a great travel knitting project as its small and portable.
The pattern uses two gradient mini skein sets (4 x 20gms for each set), however; some alternative yarn options you can use for this same design are:
You can use larger mini skein sets of 5 or more (they do not have to be a gradient if you do not want to) and you will get a larger cowl (there are also instructions in the pattern on how to make the cowl wider as well)
You can use 1 mini skein set and a solid contrast colour in a full skein
Following from Point 2 you could use a solid colour for one and a gradient or self striping full skein as the back ground colour (so in the sample this would be the blue gradient set) as I think this would be a really fun way to use a self striping or gradient skein
Finally you could use hand spun for one or both of the yarns or use handspun minis - you may need to adjust the needle size and stitch count to suit your handspun if its not fingering weight

Yarn used in the sample is by Adelaide Cottage Yarns on the Adelaide Sock base (75/25 Superwash Merino / Nylon) in the Coastal Fog Gradient Mini Set (8 x 20gm minis in two contrasting gradients).
• Needles – 3.5mm (US4) 16” circular for knitting in the round.
• Gauge – Approximately 30 sts / 4 inch in pattern after blocking.
• Size – The cowl is 42in (106.5cm) in circumference and is 6in (15cm) in depth.

• Yarn – Total amount of 160gm Fingering weight yarn (approx. 400m/437 yds per 100gm); The pattern calls for 8 mini skeins (20gm each) in two x 4 mini gradient sets. - 1 Stitch Marker for marking the beginning of the round
- Scrap yarn for provisional cast on
- Crochet hook in same/similar size as knitting needle for provisional cast on
- A spare set of circular needles in the same size or smaller than for the main pattern for picking up the provisional cast on (length of cord is not important)
- A tapestry needle for weaving in ends and grafting.
