Saturday 6th July 1957 is the day officially recognised as the day John Lennon met Paul McCartney.
Although there is some evidence to suggest they first spoke to each other previously outside a newsagent’s shop, the garden fete at St. Peter’s church, Woolton, Liverpool on the 6th July 1957 was the day that became a landmark to what was essentially the very start of what was to become a group of musicians known as The Beatles.
It was a nice summer afternoon that day in Woolton with cloudy blue sky. John was scheduled to play with his skiffle group ‘The Quarrymen’ at the garden fete at 4.15pm and 5.45pm on the field and also at 8.00pm in the church hall. They also played on the way to the fete on the back of a low-loader lorry for the procession starting from Church Road led by the Band of the Cheshire Yeomanry with street collections by the Youth Club during the procession.
Paul had a friend called Ivan Vaughan, who knew John, and Ivan suggested to Paul that they go to the fete to watch The Quarry Men. When Paul watched them perform on the afternoon sessions he liked what he saw. He was impressed John had a band.
Paul and Ivan browsed the stalls, sideshows and even a police dog display until 8pm when they headed for the church hall to see the George Edwards Band and once again The Quarrymen Skiffle Group on stage.
Afterwards, John and Paul got talking, Paul cheekily asked if he could play John’s guitar, which he correctly tuned before playing Eddie Cochran’s “Twenty Flight Rock”.
A few weeks after the garden fete, after deliberation with other members of The Quarrymen, John requested Paul join them to which Paul agreed.
Although they never knew it at the time, musical history was being made and the face of popular music would change forever just a few years later because of that fateful day.
