On the 4th June 2012, Paul McCartney played his “Jubilee Bass” as a part of the celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee in front of Buckingham Palace on The Mall in London. The bass guitar, gifted to him by Hófner, was a custom-finished limited edition violin bass emblazoned with the Union Jack flag. Some sources say McCartney’s “Jubilee Bass” had the serial number ‘UJ001’ (Union Jack 001) yet others say it was ‘1953-2012’ (the Queen’s reign from being crowned to her diamond jubilee). Regardless of trivial serial numbers, the patriotic and now iconic Union Jack Hófner violin bass even surprised McCartney himself.
