Young David Harbor, an excellent horseman, had returned home to hear the final reading of his father’s will. Harbor senior had left England bound for China three years earlier and, based on reports, it was concluded had been attacked and killed by boxer rebels and had not been heard of since.
Out of a vast fortune, David was left a miniscule amount for schooling and education up to the age of twenty-one and after which he was to inherit a mere two thousand pounds.

During his three years away, David had maintained close correspondence with his father and had kept a log of the roads travelled and places he had visited and as a result knew where to start the search.
