TME Performance PE Curriculum – Years 10–11

The TME Performance PE Curriculum is a comprehensive collection of 14 Schemes of Learning created specifically for Years 10–11 Core PE. It provides schools with an ambitious, inclusive and consistent programme that develops confident performance, tactical understanding, leadership, independence and positive lifelong engagement in physical activity.

This is a Core PE curriculum rather than an examination course. Pupils apply and adapt their existing knowledge in increasingly demanding situations, analyse performance evidence, make decisions under pressure and take greater responsibility for coaching, officiating, organisation and safe participation.

The complete curriculum includes:

  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Basketball
  • Cricket
  • Contemporary Dance
  • Fitness Training Programme
  • Football
  • Handball
  • Netball
  • Rounders
  • Rugby
  • Table Tennis
  • Trampolining
  • Volleyball

Thirteen activity schemes provide seven progressive lessons each. The Fitness Training Programme offers a flexible route of between seven and twelve lessons. Together, the collection provides 103 master lesson plans and 103 matching infographics, supporting a delivered curriculum of between 98 and 103 lessons depending on the Fitness route selected.

The collection contains approximately 236 professionally designed pages. Each activity scheme has been written to support approximately 60-minute lessons while remaining adaptable to different timetables, facilities, class sizes and pupil starting points.

A broad and balanced curriculum

The collection provides coverage across the main areas of secondary PE:

  • Invasion games through basketball, football, handball, netball and rugby
  • Net and wall activities through badminton, table tennis and volleyball
  • Striking and fielding through cricket and rounders
  • Athletic development through athletics
  • Aesthetic and compositional learning through contemporary dance and trampolining
  • Health-related activity through the Fitness Training Programme

The curriculum progresses pupils beyond isolated skill practices. Lessons increasingly require them to select, combine and adapt techniques; recognise tactical problems; analyse opponents; evaluate evidence; lead others; officiate fairly and apply their learning within authentic performance situations.

Comprehensive scheme introduction pages

Every Scheme of Learning begins with two carefully structured curriculum and assessment pages. These include:

  • Scheme and curriculum context
  • Purpose and age-appropriate expectations
  • National Curriculum PE KS4 Core connections
  • Learning journey and transfer beyond the unit
  • Prior-learning and readiness expectations
  • Safe, active and purposeful delivery guidance
  • British values, SMSC and personal development
  • Complete lesson progression
  • Know and Show learning expectations
  • Activity-specific vocabulary
  • Head–Heart–Hands assessment descriptors
  • Assessment for Learning and evidence collection
  • Plan–Monitor–Reflect metacognition
  • Structured oracy sentence stems
  • Inclusive SEND and EAL delivery

Detailed one-page lesson plans

Every lesson is presented on one clearly structured page to support straightforward delivery. Teachers receive detailed guidance for setting up, teaching, adapting and assessing every activity.

Each lesson plan contains:

  • Head, Heart and Hands learning objectives
  • Performance-progression expectations
  • Timed Warm-up, Explore, Develop, Apply and Plenary phases
  • Detailed teaching and learning activities
  • Practical dimensions, distances and playing areas
  • Equipment requirements and positioning
  • Group sizes, rotations and activity organisation
  • Technical and tactical teaching cues
  • Conditioned practices and performance challenges
  • Explicit safety expectations
  • Purposeful roles for non-performing pupils
  • Assessment for Learning opportunities
  • Observable and measurable evidence
  • STEP differentiation
  • SEND and EAL adaptations
  • Plan–Monitor–Reflect prompts
  • Structured before, during and after oracy questions

STEP differentiation is included throughout the curriculum. Space, Task, Equipment and People can be adapted to provide meaningful support or increased challenge while preserving the original learning intention.

Head, Heart and Hands assessment

The curriculum assesses the whole pupil rather than physical performance alone.

Head focuses on knowledge, tactical understanding, analysis, decision-making and the ability to justify adaptations.

Heart focuses on effort, resilience, communication, inclusion, leadership, fairness and responsible participation.

Hands focuses on the safe, consistent and effective application of techniques and tactics under increasing pressure.

Developing, Secure and Greater Depth descriptors support consistent teacher judgement while allowing pupils to understand their current performance and identify realistic next steps.

Metacognition and oracy

Every lesson includes structured Plan–Monitor–Reflect guidance.

Before performing, pupils use prior evidence to establish a measurable outcome and select an appropriate strategy. During practice, they monitor technique, decisions and outcomes before adjusting one variable. After performance, they evaluate the strongest evidence, explain why a strategy succeeded or failed and identify what should transfer into the next lesson.

Age-appropriate sentence stems help pupils explain their thinking clearly, participate in meaningful discussions and justify decisions using evidence rather than unsupported opinions.

Inclusive delivery

SEND and EAL support is embedded within every scheme and lesson rather than added as a separate consideration. Guidance includes visual demonstrations, predictable routines, adapted distances, graded equipment, accessible communication, bilingual vocabulary, sentence stems, additional processing time and purposeful performer, coach, analyst or official roles.

Adaptations preserve the intended learning while enabling every pupil to collect meaningful Head–Heart–Hands evidence.

Matching lesson infographics

Every written lesson plan is accompanied by a professionally designed TME infographic. These provide an accessible visual summary of the lesson and can be used for teacher preparation, pupil explanation, display or practical lesson delivery.

The infographics include:

  • Show, Apply and Know outcomes
  • Timed lesson phases
  • Visual activity demonstrations
  • Key teaching points
  • Head, Heart and Hands
  • STEP differentiation
  • Assessment for Learning
  • Safety guidance
  • SEND and EAL support
  • Plenary questions
  • Plan–Monitor–Reflect prompts

The consistent layout across all 14 activities helps teachers and pupils become familiar with the structure while retaining activity-specific content, techniques and tactical guidance.

The TME Performance PE Curriculum gives departments a coherent, high-quality KS4 Core PE programme that saves planning time, supports consistent teaching and provides staff with the practical detail needed to deliver every lesson confidently. It is suitable for experienced PE specialists, early-career teachers, non-specialists and departments seeking to strengthen progression, inclusion, assessment and teaching and learning across Years 10–11.
