Refuse dumpsites are found both within and on the outskirts of cities in Nigeria and due to poor and ineffective management, the dumpsites turn to sources of health hazards to people living in the vicinity of such dumps. The objective of this study is to examine the management of public dumpsites in Lagos State and its effects on residents. Specifically, the study aims to investigate the diseases that affect humans due to poor waste management; to determine knowledge levels, attitudes and practices of the community toward solid waste management, to determine the environmental effects of public dumpsites on residents living in close proximity to the dumpsites; to describe the measures which the health facilities (Ministry of Health) have put in place to minimise the impact of diseases associated with improper waste management
