By far, one of my favorite bags to make AND carry, the Michelle Bag is as versatile as it is adorable and convenient! Measuring approximately 6" wide X 9" tall X 2" deep, she's a compact purse but has room for all your essentials.

The exterior includes a quilted front pocket, perfect for just about any sized cell phone. The interior includes one zipper pocket and one slip pocket. This bag easily holds my small wallet, phone, keys, hand sanitizer, change purse, sunglasses, AirPods, and Tylenol bottle, and even more some days!

The Michelle Bag pattern is also jam packed with carrying style options. You can choose from a simple crossbody style, to a front or back sling, to a backpack, or even a hip bag depending on the connectors you choose to include!

She can be made in a huge variety of materials ranging from interfaced quilting cotton to vinyl to waterproof canvas, and is a bound lining bag - so no turning through a turning hole or pocket.

This bag pattern also also proves to be a valuable skill builder for advanced beginners to intermediate level bag makers, with the ability to practice easing in a gusset, binding, quilting, and zipper installation, all on a bag small enough that you can easily make multiples and practice these skills over and over.

Materials and Supplies:
  • 1/2 Yard Exterior (Vinyl or thin garment leather. Cotton will work, also, but you will need to interface it according to your preference). Note: this is based on a 44” yard. If you are ordering vinyl that comes in an 18” roll, you’ll need 1 yard). This also does not include the strap. How much more you need for your strap will depend on what type and method of strap you choose. For the method in this pattern, you will also need a strip of 55” X 4” of your strap material.
  • 1 Yard Interior (Waterproof canvas. I used both a 600 Denier and a thinner version in two different bags and both worked well).
  • 2 Yards Binding (Regarding the width: For one version, I used my lining fabric to create binding and in another, I used 1’ fold over elastic. When creating binding, I like to make it larger than 1” (1 1/4” works well) but the 1” fold over elastic is easy to work with and I found I was able to make 1” work with that particular material).
  • Foam (one 8’ X 10” piece for quilting only the exterior pocket. More if you choose to quilt other parts of the bag.
  • Exterior zipper with pull (number 5 handbag zipper) - 10” - (but consider making it at least 12”, if you tend to like to add your zipper pull after sewing the zipper in place).
  • Interior zipper with pull - 5”
  • Four 1” d rings (five if you are choosing the backpack/sling option)
  • Two 1” swivel clips
  • One 1” slide adjuster
  • 4 rivets (optional)
