The Lonely Tree, or Lone Tree, is a modest birch on the edge of Llyn Padarn lake in Llanberis, Snowdonia National Park. Here’s a view of the scene it enjoys during the daytime, with bold natural colours of the blue sky and green surrounding foliage.
As ‘the most photographed tree in the UK’, you’ll find many more images of this scene online. Most place the tree centred in the photo, blocking the backdrop of the Welsh valley towards Dolbadarn castle. I prefer however the composition placing the tree on the left, so the viewer can share in the scenery this tree enjoys daily.
I was lucky that the lake was lower than usual, uncovering slate rocks below the tree which give a pleasing perspective and contrasting texture. The eye is thus drawn along the rock line, to the tree itself, then beyond across the lake down the escape of the distant valley.
