Kiku (Chrysanthemum): Traditional Japanese Sashiko Medallion

A printable chrysanthemum medallion, drawn true to size and ready to stitch by hand. Print it, trace the design onto fabric, or print straight onto water-soluble stabilizer, then stitch the petal outlines and the long spokes as a hoop centerpiece, pillow panel, tote accent, or framed piece.

Kiku is the Japanese word for chrysanthemum, a flower that stands for long life and renewal in Japan. Every autumn the country celebrates it with a Chrysanthemum Festival on the 9th day of the 9th month. This medallion fans rounded petals around a small center ring, with a spoke of running stitches down the middle of each petal, so it reads as a flower from across the room and stitches up as a calm, repeating rhythm.

WHAT YOU GET (instant download, ONE PDF):

  • A 7" medallion, for a 7-8" hoop, pillow, tote/bag panel, or table-runner centerpiece
  • A 5" medallion, for a 5-6" hoop or framed accent
  • A 4" medallion, for a smaller hoop, patch, pocket, or gift topper
  • A dashed cut-box + 1-inch scale square on every page so it is easy to position and print true-scale
  • Prints true-scale on BOTH US Letter and A4, one file, just print at 100%

HOW IT WORKS: 1) Print at 100% (check the 1-inch square) -> 2) Trace onto fabric on a lightbox, or print directly onto water-soluble stabilizer -> 3) Stitch the petal outlines, then the spokes, with even running stitches -> 4) finish and rinse away the stabilizer.

Please note: this is a print-&-stitch TEMPLATE (the motif in three sizes), it does not include step-by-step lessons. It is best if you already know the basic sashiko running stitch.
