✦ Nowaki (Wind-Blown Grass): Traditional Japanese Sashiko Pattern ✦

A printable, true-scale PDF template for the Nowaki design, with clear, step-by-step instructions so you go from print to stitched piece without guesswork.

Nowaki, "the wind that parts the fields," is the early-autumn gust strong enough to bend a field of grass almost flat. Each stitched scale is one long blade and one short blade, every one leaning the same way, gathered at the base with a few small tacking stitches.

WHAT YOU GET (instant download):

• Cover with difficulty + motif overview

• Full-page stitching template at true 1:1 scale, with a stitch-path guide

• Step-by-step marking, stitching & finishing guide

• Clean transfer template for water-soluble stabilizer

• US Letter AND A4 versions, reusable, print as often as you like

DETAILS:

• Skill level: Intermediate, one continuous pass per row: the long blade, then the short blade linked tip to tip

• Time: approx. 2 to 3 hrs for a 10x10 in piece

• Thread: approx. 15 m for a 10x10 in piece (buy a little extra for slack)

• You'll need: cotton or linen, sashiko thread, a long needle, and a removable fabric marker or water-soluble stabilizer for dark fabric

HOW IT WORKS:

• Print at 100% and check the 1-inch square

• On light fabric, trace at a bright window or lightbox; on dark fabric, use water-soluble stabilizer

• One continuous pass: start on the right and work left across each row. Follow the long blade between the tick marks, then travel behind the fabric to the short blade and come back through. Continue this rhythm across the pattern
