I live in rural Lincolnshire, in a small village on the edge of the Wolds. My part of Lincolnshire is renowned for its big skies and lovely landscapes and this pattern, which is part of my Lincolnshire Shawlscapes, reflects the history of the land which surrounds my village.

Friesthorpe is a small hamlet where, prior to the First World War, the Beechey family farmed. There were eight sons who, one after another, went to fight in the Great War. Of eight, only three returned. This shawl commemorates their memory and that of their mother, who was presented to King George V and Queen Mary. When the Queen commented on her great sacrifice, she responded: ‘It was no sacrifice, Ma’am. I did not give them willingly.’ To read more about the Beechey family visit http://thelincolnshireregiment.org/beechey.shtml

The shawl itself has a finished size of approximately 165 x 35 cm and is a shallow semi circle.

To make this you will need three 100 gm balls of 4 ply (each ball = 410 metres). I used Wool is the Answer yarns “A Smidge of Blue” and “Deep Navy”. The main colour was “Berry Drops” and I used almost a full ball, the two contrasting colours use approximately half a ball each.
