Qosmos
As I walk closer, a multicolored meadow of tall-stemmed flowers greets me. Pale pinks. Magentas. Whites. Deep reds. Delicate translucent petals open to the sky, welcoming the light and warmth of the day. Strolling along the grassy path is a delight to the eye.
The Qosmos scarf / stole is inspired by the flower garden, with its snapdragons, hollyhocks, butterfly bushes, and cosmea. Qosmos is freely named after the slender cosmos flower.
The Qosmos scarf / stole artfully combines lace stitch patterns growing in a crescendo, from seedling to a spectacular display of petals and tall flowers. Come along! Stretch your lace skills, and wrap yourself in delightful and elegant lace!
For best effect, use a round yarn with good stitch definition. Yarn weights ranging from fingering to DK would be suitable. As for colorways, I would recommend solid, semi-solid, speckled, or gradient (single skein or gradient set) yarns.
When substituting yarn, select a yarn with enough bounce (eleasticity) to facilitate working the gathered stitches. A wool yarn or wool blend is especially suited.
Yarn
Malabrigo Sock (Light Fingering ; 100% Merino; 402 meters / 440 yards per 100 grams); [1,2] skeins. The sample (large size) uses 140 grams in color 855 Aguas. The scarf (small size) uses 80 grams.
Needles
3 mm (US size 2.5) 100 cm / 40 inches circular needle or size to obtain gauge.
Gauge
29 stitches and 40 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, unblocked.
20 stitches and 34 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in Stockinette stitch, blocked.
20 stitches and 31 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches in stitch pattern D – Leafy Stems, blocked.
Note: obtaining the gauge given is not crucial but will affect the finished size and the yardage needed.
Notions
Stitch markers (optional): 2 in color A (edge marker), [2,4] in color B (repeat marker). Waste yarn (or spare circular needle cable). Shorter cable (60 cm / 24 inches) for the working needle. Tapestry needle. Blocking pins. Blocking wires (optional).
Sizes
Small (scarf), large (stole); customizable.
Final measurements
Small size (scarf): Width (w): 18.5 cm / 7.25 inches, length (l): 176 cm / 69.25 inches. See schematic.
Large size (stole): Width (w): 34 cm / 13.5 inches, length (l): 176 cm / 69.25 inches. See schematic.
Skill level
Basic stitches, increases, single and multiple decreases (knits and purls), twisted stitches (knits and purls), gathered stitches. Sequence of stitch patterns including some relatively easy to memorize stitch patterns with lace patterning on odd rows only, and easy patterning on all rows. Final stitch pattern of body and edging requiring some attention and with lace patterning on both sides. Provisional CO. Elastic BO.

This pattern is worked flat from the center of the scarf / stole, starting with a provisional CO. Suggestions are given to customize the pattern.
