TME Performance Rugby Years 10–11 | Ages 14–16 | KS4
TME Performance Rugby is a complete seven-lesson Scheme of Learning designed for Years 10–11 Core PE. It develops confident and tactically intelligent rugby performance through passing, support play, gain-line running, defensive organisation, overloads and sustained phase play. Pupils progressively take greater responsibility for preparation, coaching, analysis, officiating and safe participation.
The seven-lesson progression includes:
- Ball Familiarisation and End-Zone Attack
- Forward Running, Backward Passing and the Gain Line
- Offside, Restarts and the Defensive Line
- Loops, Switches and Overload Decisions
- Phase Play and Tactical Adaptation
- Tournament Play, Officiating and Assessment
- Phase-Play Tournament, Officiating and Performance Review
Pupils learn to run forward, pass backwards and maintain effective support behind the ball. They explore width, depth, loops, switches and numerical overloads before applying these principles within conditioned games. Defensive work develops offside awareness, communication and a connected defensive line. Later lessons challenge pupils to retain possession across multiple phases, identify defensive weaknesses and adapt their tactical approach using performance evidence.
The 16-page resource includes two comprehensive curriculum and assessment pages, seven detailed one-page lesson plans and seven corresponding TME lesson infographics. The introductory pages provide curriculum context, prior-learning expectations, the complete learning journey, Know and Show outcomes, rugby vocabulary, inclusive delivery and progressive Head–Heart–Hands assessment descriptors.
Every lesson includes:
- Head, Heart and Hands learning objectives
- Timed Warm-up, Explore, Develop, Apply and Plenary activities
- Detailed pitch dimensions, end zones, channels, team sizes and rotations
- Clear teaching cues for handling, passing, support and decision-making
- Progressive conditioned games connecting technique with tactical performance
- STEP differentiation across space, task, equipment and people
- Support and challenge without reducing the intended learning
- Assessment for Learning linked to observable performance evidence
- SEND and EAL adaptations using demonstrations, diagrams and sentence stems
- Purposeful roles for coaches, analysts, officials and non-performing pupils
- Plan–Monitor–Reflect metacognition and structured oracy prompts
- Explicit guidance for spacing, consent, stop signals and safe participation
Delivery can use non-contact touch or tag rugby, with controlled-contact activities included only where school policy, staff competence and governing-body guidance permit. This makes the scheme suitable for pupils with different levels of experience while preserving meaningful tactical challenge.
The resource moves pupils beyond isolated skill practices and towards confident, organised and independently managed rugby performance. It is ideal for teachers seeking a progressive, inclusive and visually supported KS4 Core PE rugby programme.
