Making Tracks

Inspired by the wonderful and varied lines left by tyre tracks in forests, fields and on beaches, ‘Making Tracks’ is a cabled sweater with saddle shoulder sleeves and a round neck.

Making Tracks was first published in Issue 222 of The Knitter magazine in November 2025. Worked in pieces from the bottom up, the structure of this garment creates a very wearable sweater. The cables have a regularity that should help those newer to cable knitting, and there is plenty to entertain the more experienced knitter. To adjust the fit for a female frame (for example, shortening the arms), see Note below.

Yarn

West Yorkshire Spinners, Fleece Bluefaced Leicester DK (100% Bluefaced Leicester Wool; 225m/246yds per 100g skein)

Quarry (1110), 8 (8:9:10:11:11:12:13) x 100g skeins

Needles

1 pair 4mm (UK 8/US 6) knitting needles

1 pair 3.25mm (UK 10/US 3) knitting needles

3.25cm (UK 10/US 3) circular needles, 40-50cm long

Note

To adjust the sleeve length, work to desired underarm length before adding the locking stitch marker (this is where the sleeve joins the body), then continue as written. To adjust the body length, work to desired length before underarm cast off.
