“Golden Slumbers”, “Carry That Weight” and “The End” is a three-song medley and the last track(s) on The Beatles studio album ‘Abbey Road’.
Paul McCartney got the inspiration for “Golden Slumbers” from looking through his step-sisters nursery rhymes piano book as he was playing the piano at his dad’s house in Liverpool. Although he can’t read music, he started putting his own tune to the first verse and slightly altered the words.
The original ‘song’, however, was actually a poem that featured in act 4, scene 2 of “Patient Grissill (Grissel)”; a comedy play by Henry Chettle, William Haughton and Thomas Dekker in the year 1603.
Penned by Dekker in around 1599, the original poem was called ‘Cradle Song’:
“Golden Slumbers kiss your eyes,
Smiles awake you when you rise;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.
Care is heavy, therefore sleep you,
You are care, and care must keep you;
Sleep, pretty wantons, do not cry,
And I will sing a lullaby,
Rock them, rock them, lullaby.
McCartney remembers “trying to get a very strong vocal on it, because it was such a gentle theme”.
The whole medley by The Beatles; “Golden Slumbers”, “Carry That Weight” and “The End” evokes the cherished moments of being cared for as a child that can’ be regained, the weight of adult responsibility, and the enduring power of love.
This poster depicts the original lines from Patient Grissill's Act 4, Scene 2 with Paul McCartney's handwritten lyrics of his adapted version to "Golden Slumbers" that was used on the Abbey Road album beneath.
Will look fantastic if framed, especially if printed at UK A3 / USA Tabloid or Ledger (but it will adjust itself to any size you prefer).
