TME Advanced Orienteering – Complete Years 7–9 Scheme of Learning

Develop confident, independent and resilient navigators with this 12-lesson Years 7–9 orienteering scheme. Pupils learn to interpret maps, recognise symbols, orientate accurately, estimate distance, follow routes and make efficient route choices.

The learning progresses from controlled navigation activities to increasingly complex challenges requiring planning, teamwork, decision-making and adaptation under time pressure. Pupils learn how to balance speed with accuracy and how to recover constructively when a chosen route is unsuccessful.

Detailed lesson plans include course organisation, equipment, safety procedures, boundaries and non-active responsibilities. Visual infographics, STEP differentiation, SEND and EAL support, Assessment for Learning and Head–Heart–Hands criteria are included. Plan–Monitor–Reflect tasks and oracy prompts encourage pupils to explain route choices, evaluate evidence and take greater responsibility for problem-solving.
