I wrote this one about a young woman I knew who was trying to find her way as a gay teenager back in the early '90s. It was a completely different world for LGBTQ+ kids then, and I wanted to capture that specific tension of having this beautiful, forbidden romance blooming right in the middle of a school hallway.
The song follows how that relationship was initially torn apart by the constant bullying and the sheer amount of abuse they had to endure. It’s a tough story, but I really wanted to include the ending—that they actually found their way back to each other years later. They’re happily married now, and "Buttercup Love" is my way of celebrating that resilience and the fact that, in the end, they got the life they deserved.
