Unit 3 focuses on the rise, expansion, and maintenance of powerful land-based empires from c. 1450–1750, including the Ottoman, Safavid, Mughal, Ming, Qing, and Russian Empires. Students examine how military technology, government institutions, religion, and cultural traditions helped rulers build and maintain political authority.

Inside this FREE preview, you’ll see samples of:

  • Historical background readings focused on comparison, causation, and continuity and change over time (CCOT)
  • AP World History vocabulary and historical vocabulary application
  • Primary source analysis
  • Historical thinking using evidence
  • Timeline and chronology activities
  • Short Answer Question (SAQ) practice
  • Long Essay Question (LEQ) practice
  • AP-style historical reasoning and evidence-based questions

The primary-source activities include examples centered on Suleiman the Magnificent, Emperor Akbar, and the Kangxi Emperor, giving students opportunities to practice sourcing, close reading, historical context, and historical thinking.

Students also work with essential Unit 3 concepts and vocabulary such as Gunpowder Empires, Janissaries, devshirme, religious tolerance, Sunni and Shia Islam, bureaucracy, syncretism, and monumental architecture.

The preview also demonstrates the level of AP Exam preparation incorporated throughout the complete resource. For example, students practice SAQs addressing gunpowder technology, political institutions, the Ottoman and Mughal Empires, and continuity between the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The LEQ sample asks students to evaluate the extent to which gunpowder technology contributed to the expansion and success of land-based empires between 1450 and 1750, while developing a defensible thesis, contextualization, evidence, and historical reasoning.
