Deer God

During a clear out, I found a lot of old pillows that, while clean, had gone rather lumpy. I don't like to throw anything out if I can possibly think of a use for it, so I hit on the idea of doing some experimental felting stuff for myself. I've got a few projects in mind, but one of them is an anthropomorphic deer with its antlers growing into oak branches. I had originally planned to do this as a clay sculpture, but felting has the advantage of infinite working time and not needing baking or drying time.

I started with a wire armature, then started building up the muscles of the body with the pillow stuffing fibre. I used coloured sheep's wool for the small details like hands and feet where I wasn't sure I could add the colour later without making it too bulky.

A felted sculpture of an anthropomorphic deer without a head, it has been partially coloured, covering its hooves and one leg
