I decided that it would be easier to get the right shape for the head if I built up the shape of the skull first, so I felted a skull working from multiple deer skull references and attached it to the body. A couple more hours of work resulted in the neck muscles being added and colour added up to the back of the head, an effect that looks rather like a skeleton in a teddy bear onesie.
