Not long ago, I got into a conversation on Bluesky with someone who had just discovered that nettles could be used as a source of fibre for making cordage and cloth. I mentioned that I'd heard the processing was very similar to that of flax to turn it into linen, which ended up with me falling down an internet research hole on places where I could obtain the necessary tools and education on how to actually make linen.
I offhandedly mentioned that I could get a seed to cloth linen kit sent to me for £85, which was outside my budget but a nice idea.
Ping. You have received a donation of £85. "Hope this will help you get the desired kit, now you only need the time for the project, haha"
Thank you, kind person!
Well it was my original intention to stream the unboxing, but technology didn't behave as planned and after I'd fixed the audio issues, my bitrate was too low for anyone to actually see anything.
So I've taken plenty of pictures of the kit and will make a series of blog posts about the tools, process, and my experiments with what I can possibly extract useful fibres from.
Thanks to Adrian Critten for the conversation that spurred me to look for this kit in the first place, and Drea for the donation that allowed me to buy it.
