The bricks will need another coat of brick red to get a good solid colour, then highlights and shadows to accentuate the contours. As that continues, I also took some time to stain the floorboards inside. These were made from strips of balsa wood cut to size and glued down.
The stain is made from natural alder cone ink that was collected and made as part of the craft group's foray into natural paint making, and gives the floorboards a dark, heavily used look. The effect was created by painting slightly diluted ink on and then quickly wiping it off with a sponge which allowed it to absorb into the grain of the wood but not stain too uniformly.
