Mondays don’t have to be mundane, especially when you have a dachshund like Bella by your side! There’s nothing like hitting the trails with your furry friend, and hiking with a dachshund brings its own unique set of joys and challenges. Let's dive into some tips and tales from our adventures with Bella, the adventurous little doxie who proves that big excitement can come in small packages.
Preparing for the Hike
Packing Essentials
Before heading out, it’s crucial to pack the essentials. Here’s what Bella and I always take on our hikes:
- Water and Collapsible Bowl: Hydration is key, especially for a small dog like Bella.
- Leash and Harness: Safety first. A harness is better for Bella’s back.
- Treats and Snacks: For energy boosts and rewarding good behavior.
- Poop Bags: Leave no trace, especially Bella’s trace!
- First Aid Kit: For both humans and dogs.
- Towel: For muddy paws and impromptu swims.
Choosing the Right Trail
Not all trails are suitable for dachshunds. Bella’s short legs mean we need to choose trails that aren’t too steep or rocky. Look for trails with moderate inclines and plenty of shade. Our favorite trails are those with scenic views and varied terrain, giving Bella plenty to sniff and explore.
Hitting the Trail
Starting the Adventure
Bella always knows when we’re going hiking. Her excitement is contagious as she wiggles around while I pack our gear. As soon as we hit the trailhead, Bella's nose is to the ground, taking in all the new scents. Her enthusiasm reminds me to appreciate the small things in nature – like the rustle of leaves or the distant chirping of birds.
The Great Sniffing Expedition
One of the joys of hiking with Bella is watching her explore. Dachshunds are scent hounds, and Bella takes her sniffing duties seriously. On one hike, she spent a good ten minutes investigating a fallen log. It turned out to be a chipmunk’s home, and though Bella didn’t catch sight of the critter, she was delighted by its lingering scent.
Overcoming Obstacles
Dachshunds are known for their stubbornness, and Bella is no exception. There was a time when we encountered a small stream. Bella refused to get her paws wet and simply sat down, staring at the water as if it were an ocean. After some gentle coaxing and a few treats, she bravely hopped over the stream, much to our amusement.

Mid-Hike Breaks
Snack Time
Halfway through our hike, we find a nice spot to rest. Bella loves this part because it means snack time. While I munch on a granola bar, Bella enjoys her dog-safe treats. This is also a good time to check her paws for any debris and ensure she’s not overheated.
Taking in the Views
One of our favorite spots is a scenic overlook where we can see the valley below. Bella sits beside me, her ears perked up, taking in the view. It’s these moments that make hiking with her so special – sharing the beauty of nature with my loyal companion.
Wrapping Up the Adventure
The Home Stretch
As we head back, Bella’s pace slows a bit. She’s tired but happy, her little legs still moving determinedly. I keep a close eye on her to make sure she’s not overexerting herself. When we finally reach the car, Bella jumps in and promptly curls up for a nap.
Post-Hike Pampering
Back home, it’s time for a quick bath to wash off the trail dust. Bella tolerates the bath, knowing it’s followed by a cozy blanket and a well-deserved nap. As she sleeps, I reflect on our adventure, already planning our next hike.
Tips for a Successful Hike with Your Dachshund
- Start Small: Begin with shorter, easier trails to build stamina and confidence.
- Watch the Weather: Avoid hiking in extreme heat or cold. Dachshunds can overheat quickly.
- Mind Their Back: Be cautious of steep trails or jumps that can strain their long backs.
- Keep it Fun: Make the hike enjoyable with frequent breaks and lots of praise.
- Stay Alert: Keep an eye out for wildlife or hazards that could pose a risk to your dachshund.
Hiking with Bella has been an incredibly rewarding experience. Her adventurous spirit and keen sense of exploration add a special joy to every hike. So, grab your gear, leash up your doxie, and hit the trails. The great outdoors is waiting for you and your adventurous dachshund!
