A Walk in the Wolds
This is a top-down ‘pop over’ type jumper without sleeves. It is fastened at both sides with six buttons (total) and woollen crocheted loops. It’s worked mostly in cable with stocking stitch and moss stitch edges. The beauty of this type of jumper is that the cable stitches pull it in a little so it really is an easy to wear item as there’s plenty of stretch. When blocked, the garment is roughly 64cm (25 inches) in width with a length of approximately 80cm (32 inches). If it is required to be slightly wider (or narrower) then the 14 stitches of the stocking stitch panel at either side is approximately 3 inches or 8 cm wide so it can be sized up or down at this point. But as I’ve said, it’s amazing just how much cable stitches can stretch!
The red sample shown was knit in Wool is the Answer 4 ply yarn (100 gms = 420 metres). It is 75% super wash merino and 25% nylon. You will need 6 x 400m of yarn and work two strands together. I used three balls of a scarlet colour and three balls of a wine shade which, when worked together, gave a pleasant marled effect. The green version was made from Wool is the Answer Emerald plus some yarn I found in a yarn shop called Loop, in London, and is called Snake.
If you wish to use double knit wool then you will need approximately 1200 metres of yarn.
