“The Lonely Tree of Padarn at Dusk”
‘The Lonely Tree’ is a modest birch, sat on the edge of Llyn Padarn, a stunning lake near the foot of Mount Snowdon (Llyn = Lake). I hadn’t heard of it before my friendly Airbnb host in Llanberis suggested a visit. I’ve since learned it’s the most photographed tree in Britain, even having its own Facebook fan page, so I hope this scene does it justice!
I took this in fairly low light, as the sun was already setting behind me after a day wandering Llanberis. Though tired from a long jaunt, I just had to grab the shot when I noticed the skies creating this symphony of colour as the sunlight faded. Thankfully I was able to hold the camera still enough for a slower shutter speed on one or two occasions.
While a frequently-photographed scene, few use the composition placing the tree on the left. To me this seems the perfect placement, given how it balances against the bushels on the right while leading your eye down the central valley to share in the awesome view this tree permanently enjoys. This includes the added bonus of the majestic Dolbadarn Castle, in the distance overlooking the lake (clearer on the bigger image downloads).
I was also lucky in that the lake’s water level was relatively lower than usual, so I could incorporate the leading line of the natural slate towards the (left-of) centrepiece. The crisp detail of these rocks and the tree is immense (see the detail preview image), with things softening very slightly further out on the lake, resulting from the wider f-stop used to secure more photons for the photo.
Want a quality and hand-made framed print of this iconic scene, or maybe an impactful print on acrylic / canvas? Get it here, delivered ready to hang on your wall: The Lonely Tree prints.
Tech Specs: Shot on Canon 6D @ 32mm, ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/50 sec. Enhanced in Lightroom. JPEG download only.
