I Pick Up Dreams ( remix & AI music video by Paul Seling )
This animated video was created as a tribute to my sister, Paula, and to her song “I Pick Up Dreams,” originally written nearly twenty years ago. The project reimagines the piece through a new remix and an AI-generated animated narrative that explores themes of artistic identity, solitude, imagination, and transformation.
The story follows a young boy building sandcastles on a beach—an image that reflects the fragile beginnings of creativity. While other children around him are more socially integrated and playful, he appears isolated, absorbed in his own inner world. His struggle reflects the archetype of the solitary artist, but also the experience of many children who feel disconnected from their surroundings and eventually discover, through art, a personal path back toward communication and belonging.
A secondary female character functions as both a subtle antagonist and a symbolic counterpart. She embodies several layers of meaning: a psychological “nemesis,” a projection of the artist’s anima, and a reminder that human beings are shaped by very different emotional and instinctual structures. Her presence hints that even the most introspective artist remains deeply influenced by instinct, desire, and the complex realities of human relationships.
The narrative draws inspiration from the ancient Greek myth of Pygmalion—the sculptor who, disappointed by the world around him, creates an ideal woman from ivory and ultimately falls in love with his own creation. In this reinterpretation, the myth becomes a meditation on the transformative power of art: the way artists project their ideals, struggles, and dreams into the works they create.
Here, the idealized figure appears in the form of Erato, the Greek muse of lyric poetry and music. She represents the artist’s lifelong attraction to music, especially electronic sound, and also evokes the imaginary companions that often accompany children through difficult moments of solitude. At the climax of the story, the muse lifts the child beyond the earthly environment and into cosmic space, allowing him to step outside the pressures of everyday reality and observe human concerns from a distant, almost philosophical perspective.
Visually, the film was created using AI video generation technology, compressing what traditionally might require months of animation work into only a few days. Yet the project also reflects on the evolving relationship between technology and creativity. While artificial intelligence can accelerate production, the narrative suggests that art ultimately depends on human experience, imagination, and storytelling.
The remix accompanying the video follows the emotional flow of Paula’s original vocal performance. Built around a more colorful and slightly jazz-inflected harmonic structure, the arrangement combines vintage electric piano, acoustic guitars, semi-acoustic drum textures, subtle electronic elements, and orchestral accents such as strings and harp. The result is a hybrid sound that blends analog warmth with modern production techniques.
Together, the remix and the animated narrative form a reflective piece about creativity itself: the solitude of the artist, the myths that shape our understanding of creation, and the uncertain yet fascinating future of art in the age of artificial intelligence.
