Eternal Rapture ( AI animation short, 2026 )
Eternal Rapture is an experimental short film created after four months of exploration with generative AI. Conceived as both a narrative piece and a reflection on the creative process itself, the project merges retro-futuristic imagery with the aesthetic language of classic 1980s Japanese anime.
The film unfolds in a stylized world inspired by late-twentieth-century media culture, where symbols of technological progress and nostalgia coexist. One of the central visual motifs is a massive zeppelin drifting through smoky skies—a metaphor for the complex, retro-tinged media systems that shape public perception and cultural memory.
At the center of the story stands a cybernetic character, part human and part machine, representing the ambiguous position of the contemporary artist. The cyborg functions as a metaphor for artistic identity in the age of technology: creative expression that exists both outside institutional media systems and yet inevitably within them.
The protagonist was generated from a restored photograph of the creator taken during his high school years, allowing the avatar to function as a semi-autobiographical figure with whom viewers can easily identify. The female character, inspired by the creator’s sister, evokes the moment when her entrance into the Romanian media world in the late 1990s transformed not only her life but also the lives of those around her.
Another key figure represents a memory from adolescence: a girl the protagonist loved from afar but never found the courage to approach. This emotional layer introduces themes of nostalgia, missed connections, and the formative experiences that shape personal identity.
Throughout the film, artists appear as “energy sources” for the media system—figures whose creativity fuels the machinery of cultural production. At the same time, other characters emerge as ambiguous cyborg-like agents, suggesting individuals who seem neither entirely human nor entirely mechanical, operating within the invisible mechanisms of the media landscape.
Visually, the film embraces the expressive imperfections of AI-generated imagery. Rather than striving for photorealistic continuity, the creator deliberately chose the anime medium, whose graphic style naturally accommodates subtle variations in character design and motion. The result is a dreamlike retro-futuristic atmosphere blending steampunk, cyberpunk, and classic anime influences.
The accompanying soundtrack follows a minimalist retrowave aesthetic. Built around vintage electronic piano, layered guitars, analog-inspired synthesizers, and simple MIDI-programmed drums, the music evokes the sonic palette of the 1980s while maintaining a modern digital production approach. Ambient textures and subtle synth leads reinforce the film’s nostalgic and introspective tone.
Ultimately, Eternal Rapture is both a personal meditation and a technological experiment. It reflects on memory, identity, and the evolving role of artists in an era where artificial intelligence increasingly participates in the creative process. Rather than replacing human creativity, the film suggests that AI can function as an unpredictable collaborator—introducing chance, coincidence, and new layers of interpretation into artistic work.
