Looking back on it, I think that my mother’s favorite classes in school were her art classes. I think she enjoyed learning about classic art and architecture as much as she did learning drawing and watercolors. One thing that stood out in her mind, that she often tested me on to see if I remembered too, were the three main types of columns used in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. I still remember: the columns are either Doric, Ionic, or Corinthian. The easy, clean lines of the stitch in these socks reminds me of the simplest of the three column types: Doric.

Socks are knit from the cuff down. The number of pattern repeats decreases to a point on the top of the foot as it nears the toe. Stitch pattern is both written and charted. Pattern is suitable for both women and men.

  • Model: Merino Sock from Lush Yarn; 100% merino wool; 360 yards in 100 grams.
  • Gauge: 7.5 sts to 1 inch in stockinette in the round.
  • Needles: US 1.5 (2.5 mm).
