TECTONIC SHIFTER

Tectonic Shifter is an interactive earth science and geography game where students control tectonic plates and must choose the correct type of plate movement to match a geologic event. Players are shown landforms and clues such as folded mountains, volcanic arcs, deep ocean trenches, mid ocean ridges, fault lines, and earthquakes, then must decide whether the plates should collide, separate, or slide past each other to create that feature.

The game does not give away the answer. Instead of naming the plate boundary, it shows the result, forcing students to understand the cause and effect between tectonic motion and Earth’s surface. When students choose an action, they see the plates physically move on screen, magma appear, mountains rise, or earthquakes shake the ground, reinforcing the science through visual feedback.
