Stormy Seas at Budleigh

Winter in Budleigh often creates an impressive spectacle, as the elements pummel the Jurassic Coast. The noise of crashing waves upon the stones on this mile-long, steep pebble beach is both memorable and mesmerising, if you’re willing to venture out and bear the elements. Going for a dip is exhilarating too, bobbing about in the large, undulating swell; that is, if you can time your venture out correctly to avoid catastrophe, beyond where the waves break!

This image looks west across the beach while the tide was out, with some sizeable waves breaking on the shore near the estuary. Above the waves is where Marine Parade leads to the town centre. Numerous folk on the beach are watching the scenes unfold. Two cars struggle to pass each other on the infamously narrow Salting Hill, leading down to Lime Kiln car park.

Black and white conversion really emphasises the contrasting tones, patterns, and motion. The long zoom at over 100mm piles on the layers of detail, from the glistening stones covered in seaweed in the foreground, to the stormy sea, myriad of buildings, and then the treeline in the distance.

This image features as December 2024 in my limited edition Budleigh 2024 calendar.
