Pining for Bluebells
These pine trees at the mouth of the River Otter must be some of the most photographed trees in history (except for of course the Lonely Tree of Llanberis!). Believed to be planted in the late 1800s by Lady Rolle, they make quite an impressive decoration along the East side of the Otter Estuary and run alongside the South West Coast Path.
However, I don’t think they’ve been captured before in this way. Taken in late Spring, I spotted this small patch of bluebells in the brush beside Lime Kiln car park. I was struck by how the bluebells seemed to mirror the treeline in the background behind. The Otter Head meanwhile stands proudly at the mouth of the river. As a bonus, I managed not to fall over the edge into the riverbed through the uncertain footing!
Note: This was taken in the midst of the Lower Otter Restoration Project in 2023.
