A scene all locals to Budleigh will recognise and appreciate is this view of the cottages where Marine Parade meets Fore Street. The black and white really brings out the contrasting tones of the mixed age architecture.

The octagonal shaped building near the middle of the image boasts a plaque on the wall, commemorating the artist Sir John Everett Millais. He stayed there in 1870 while painting his famous picture, “The Boyhood of Raleigh”. This painting strongly features the stone wall opposite, plus a glimpse of Otter Head in the distance.

The cottages in the foreground look almost Mediterranean, with their window shutters and architectural details. Following the road into the distance, you can glimpse my kids’ favourite haunt, the local eclectic sweet shop called Toffee Nosed. On the left is another grand Victorian building, which houses the very exclusive Budleigh Social Club.

This image features as January 2024 in my limited edition Budleigh 2024 calendar.
