Steamer Steps West
Steamer Steps is so named because around a century ago, steamer ships used to land on the beach ferrying holiday-making passengers around the local area. But in recent years, the ongoing coastal erosion has caused some deterioration of the pedestrian areas and prompted some extra areas to be fenced off. This image was taken just after a wintry storm in January 2024, which destroyed the beach café shack at this end of Budleigh beach.
This HDR shot features in my Budleigh Salterton 2025 calendar. I liked the afternoon beaming sunshine here, as ‘the calm after the storm’. There’s also plenty of exploring for the eye, following the path of the railings and beyond the cliff face.
