The River Otter is a charming waterway, flowing south through East Devon and meeting the sea in Budleigh Salterton. The estuary is a haven for all manner of birds and other wildlife. This image captures its final bend, past the stony outcrop of Budleigh beach, grazing the side of Otter Head, before being absorbed into the sea.

Most of the images you’ll see of Otter Head and these much-photographed Scots pine trees are from the main beach looking east. However, I quite liked this view looking north from right beside where the river meets the sea itself. It provides quite a visual ‘trilogy’ of intrigue.

The first visual pleasure in this trilogy is of course Budleigh’s iconic treeline, standing proudly over a small lagoon-like area which makes a fantastic natural swimming pool. On the right is part of Otter Head, patterned by timeless weathering and erosion from the waterway. Then finally, providing a lighter patch to the composition, are a myriad of Budleigh’s Triassic pebble stones, of varying patterns and sizes.

As a bonus, if you zoom in near the trees, you’ll notice several figures walking the South West Coast Path.
