English Dictionary
English, a West Germanic language that originated in early medieval England, has since become a global lingua franca. Named after the Angles, one of the Germanic peoples who migrated to Britain after the Roman Empire’s decline, English’s global influence stems from the former British Empire (now the Commonwealth of Nations) and the United States. It holds the distinction of being the most widely spoken second language worldwide, surpassing native speakers. However, English ranks only third among native languages, trailing behind Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.
